Frequently Asked Questions

  • When should my child start the college recruiting process?

There’s no single “right” time, but most student-athletes should begin learning about recruiting in 9th grade. Early education helps families avoid mistakes, understand timelines, and make better academic and athletic decisions. Typically, the process will start for most student-athletes entering the summer of their Junior Year.

  • How important are academics in the recruiting process?

Academics are extremely important. Coaches evaluate GPA, course rigor, eligibility, and admissions fit. Strong academics increase recruiting options and scholarship opportunities.

  • What divisions or levels should my child consider?

Student-athletes should explore NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College options. The best fit depends on academics, athletic ability, playing time goals, location, and personal preferences—not just division level. They should find the school where they can develop academically, athletically, and personally.

  • How do college coaches find and evaluate athletes?

    Coaches primarily evaluate athletes through:

    • Game and highlight video
    • Direct communication (emails, calls, texts)
    • Recommendations from high school or club coaches
    • Camps, showcases, and tournaments
  • Does my child need a highlight video?

Yes. A highlight video is often the first thing coaches ask for many sports. . It should be short (3–5 minutes), easy to view, and clearly show the athlete’s strengths.  For sports that require times or scores they many not be as necessary.

  • How many schools should my child contact?

Most student-athletes should start with 15–25 schools. This list narrows over time as communication, fit, and opportunities become clearer.

  • What role should parents play in the recruiting process?

Parents play a supportive role—helping with organization, scheduling, and decision-making. However, student-athletes should lead communication with coaches whenever possible.

  • Are recruiting services or guarantees legitimate?

Families should be cautious of services that promise scholarships or placements. Recruiting outcomes depend on fit, effort, academics, and performance. Education and preparation are far more valuable than guarantees.

  • How do scholarships really work?

Scholarships vary by sport and level. Many are partial scholarships, and financial aid often includes a mix of athletic, academic, and need-based aid.

  • What if my child isn’t being contacted by college coaches?

This is very common. A lack of contact usually means the athlete needs to:

    • Improve or update their recruiting materials
    • Expand their school list
    • Proactively reach out to coaches
    • Better align athletic level with school options
  • How important are camps and showcases?

Camps and showcases can be helpful if chosen strategically. They are most effective when an athlete already has a target school list and uses events to connect with specific coaches.

  • What does “finding the right fit” really mean?

Fit includes academics, athletics, campus culture, coaching style, playing time opportunity, and long-term goals. The “best” school is the one where the student-athlete can succeed in all areas.

  • When and how do recruiting decisions typically happen?

Timelines vary by sport and level. Some decisions happen early; others occur late in high school or even after graduation. Staying educated, flexible, and proactive is key.
